Honoring the legacy of former Justice Robert M. Campbell
The Supreme Court of Texas mourns the passing of former Justice Robert M. Campbell, who departed this life on February 2, 2025, at his beloved ranch in Central Texas.
Born March 1, 1935 in Waco and educated in Jonesboro public schools, Justice Campbell served two active-duty tours in the U.S. Army before receiving his bachelor’s degree from Texas Wesleyan College and his juris doctor from Baylor University.
Justice Campbell practiced law in Waco with the firm Dunnam & Dunnam before challenging and defeating an appointed incumbent in the 1978 Democratic primary election for a seat on the Supreme Court of Texas. He was re-elected to the seat in 1980 and then 1986, serving honorably until his retirement from the Court in 1988.
Over his tenure, Justice Campbell authored more than 150 opinions that helped shape Texas law. His leadership extended beyond the bench as the first chairman of the Judicial Budget Board, where he played a crucial role in securing funding for the Texas judiciary. His efforts ensured the continued strength and efficiency of the judicial branch of government.
The Chief Justice and Justices of the Supreme Court of Texas extend their deepest condolences to Justice Campbell’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him. Sicut Patribus Sit Deus Nobis.
